Thanksgiving week is quite the busy one for the North Carolina basketball team, as they are participating in the Findlay Toyota (not Findlay College) Las Vegas Invitational. As the name states, this event is not a tournament, it’s an invitational, so the set-up is awkward, but Carolina Water Cooler is here to attempt to spread it out in a nutshell. (more…)

If you haven’t already, then forget the miserable experience that was the N.C. State football game this past weekend. North Carolina is a basketball school, and Wednesday officially begins basketball season. Hey, if the Wolfpack can lose a basketball game to the Heels and make themselves feel better by saying they’re a football school, Carolina fans can certainly do the same thing – just substitute “basketball” for “football” and you’re good to go. (more…)

Remember last year when the Heels played exhibition games against St. Augustine’s and Pfeiffer to open the season? We’ll forgive you if you don’t, since Carolina won those games by a total of 70 points. But for those of you who can remember, do you recall the nicknames of those two schools? If you said “Falcons” and “Falcons” then you are correct. Well, last weekend, the Tar Heels opened exhibition play with the Shaw Bears. Care to take a stab at the Lenoir-Rhyne College nickname? If you guessed anything other than “Bears,” you’ve obviously not been reading this site very long. We’re nothing if not predictable. (more…)

This weekend is Homecoming for the University of North Carolina. That means many things. It means there will be a large number of alumni walking around pointing and saying things like “that’s new,” or “I remember taking psychology in that building,” or “hey, what happened to Chase?” It means a veritable cornucopia of groups, ranging from “Band” to “Black Alumni” to “Campus Y,” will be hosting reunions. It also means sports. And, to be honest, sports probably should have been first on that list. (more…)

Amid all the speculation this week regarding the future of a certain ACC coach, many fans have forgotten that North Carolina and Wake Forest have a date in Winston-Salem on Saturday. Rumors have been running rampant all week that Jim Grobe, head coach of the Demon Deacons, may be leaving Wake Forest at the conclusion of this season. (more…)

This Saturday the Heels finally break their lengthy streak of consecutive noon kickoffs, as they play host to the University of South Carolina at Columbia. Do they say “at Columbia” down there, or is unnecessary given that the school is the only institute of “higher learning” located in the Palmetto State? (Just kidding, Wofford.) (more…)

On Saturday afternoon, the University of Miami will visit Chapel Hill for a big tackle football contest. Carolina (1-4) will be looking to break a four-game losing streak, while the Hurricanes (4-1) will hope to win their fourth straight. (more…)

Coming off their worst loss of the season, North Carolina will head to Lane Stadium this Saturday to face the Hokies of Virginia Tech. The Heels enter the game at 1-3, with the lone win coming against a Division 1-AA team who had little chance at victory, while Tech stands at 3-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of a team they had virtually no chance of beating. If Hokie fans try to tell you they could have beaten LSU, just remind them that they lost the game by five touchdowns and two field goals – even worse than the Heels lost to South Florida! (more…)

This Saturday the North Carolina football team will make the long trek to Tampa to take on the University of South Florida. It won’t be that tough a trek for the Heels, as they’ll be flying. Or at the very least, taking a bus. Either way, it’s not like they have to walk to Tampa – which is kind of what the word “trek” implies. Sorry if we misled you. Speaking of Tampa, are we correct in thinking the city used to be named ” Tampa Bay,” or are these two completely different municipalities? (more…)

Last time Butch Davis took on the Pirates of East Carolina, the game ended with the goalposts in Carter-Finley Stadium being torn down. Sounds odd, but it’s true. After Hurricane Floyd tore through ECU’s Greenville campus, N.C. State allowed the Pirates to “host” Davis’ Miami squad in Raleigh. In a truly remarkable display of gratitude and class, the Pirates upended both goalposts on the Wolfpack’s home field after upending the ninth ranked team in the nation. (more…)
