If you listen closely to most pressers, you get the typical coach/player-speak in response to the media. But here at the Carolina Water Cooler, listening is a finely tuned skill.
Here are some quotes from Monday’s PC, with a little extra CWC listening power to decode what they actually meant to say. The actual quote is in black, what they meant to say is in red.

Interim Head Coach Everett Withers welcoming the crowd:
“Thank you all for coming. If one person says the name Butch Davis, so help me God….”
Withers on naming team captains:
“We did name three permanent captains for the season. They are Cam Holland, our senior center, Casey Barth, obviously for special teams and Kevin Reddick as our defensive captain. We wanted to name Brandon Willis captain, but he apparently was named captain at Tennessee, Florida State, and UCLA. We thought it might be too much for him to handle.”
Withers on how sharp the players look considering the circumstances:
“I said this a few weeks back, but I think we’ve had some practice at it for the last 13 months. I’ve been really pleased. We had practice yesterday and I felt like it was as sharp a practice as we’ve had. I think these guys are just ready to prove a lot this year. Are you kidding? We’re not missing six starters for our opening game. This is like Christmas. “
Withers on facing an unfamiliar opponent:
“The problem with the first ballgame against an unfamiliar opponent is that you practice a lot of different things because they aren’t on your schedule every year. Have you seen our defensive line depth chart? I’d be surprised if George Mason, wait, who are we playing? Oh yeah, James Madison. I’d be surprised if James Madison’s 3rd string quarterback doesn’t take the majority of the snaps.”
Bryn Renner on starting his first game at Carolina:
“I think it’s more anticipation. I’m think I’m just ready – ready for Saturday to come. But I know we need to have a good week of practice and take it one practice at a time. Yesterday I think we started off with good meetings and a walkthrough, but I definitely think we’re getting prepared for Saturday and we’re focused. Honestly, I’m sick of wearing that green jersey. The guys don’t even wash it because they say it doesn’t have grass stains on it.”
Renner on having Ryan Houston back in the lineup:
“He’s played in big-time games, which helps me out, because I’m a new starter, and I’m really going to lean on him sometimes – just give him the ball on a third-and-3, and know he’s going to get 6 [yards], just because he’s so powerful. I’m hoping for lots of 3rd and eights, because my stat line is going to be terrible if we have a lot of 3rd and threes. Ryan will just get the ball every single time.”
